is blatantly set up as a variation on the blowjob bar bet from the original, and they double-down on the “Lougle” plotline that concluded that film as well. Indeed, when the filmmakers aren’t half-assing rehashes of the best jokes from the first film, they’re creating a shallow pageant of debauchery and stale, churlish humor. Much like Back to the Future II, Hot Tub Time Machine 2 series sends our heroes-Nick, Jacob (Clark Duke), and grotesquely selfish Lou (Rob Corddry)-into the future rather than back into the past, where they mean to find out who, in 2015, shot Lou in the dick. (Adam Scott), in a virtual-reality simulation, a routine barbarism on Choozy Doozy, America’s favorite television show in 2025. The absence of this modicum of personal reflexivity in Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is noticeable way before Nick Webber (Craig Robinson) essentially rapes Adam’s son, Adam Jr. The plot of the pilot episode is loosely adapted from the NES version of the first Double Dragon game, with the episode's villains consisting of the mysterious Shadow Boss (Jimmy's initial alter-ego), and his henchmen Abobo and Willy (who were based on enemy characters from the game).īy the end of the second episode, Abobo and Willy are sucked into the Shadow Mural, never to be seen again, while Jimmy abandons his evil ways and reconciles with his brother to fight against the series' true antagonist, the Shadow Master.Īll of the characters introduced from the second episode onward are original creations made for the show, although most of the villains are also used in the Tradewest-produced "Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls", a competitive fighting game released for home consoles.Part of what made Hot Tub Time Machine so oddly compelling was the vision of a middle-aged John Cusack exploring the roots and life trajectory of an archetype he at least partially originated there was a measure of genuine regret to what Cusack’s Adam and his cronies were going through. The futile search for their father, John Lee, is a subplot throughout the series. During the course of the series, the brothers recruit allies in their war against the Shadow Master and his henchmen. Billy is raised by an elderly martial arts master known as the Oldest Dragon, and his brother Jimmy is raised by the evil Shadow Master as his second-in-command, the Shadow Boss.Īs a result, the Lee brothers oppose each other as adults but when Jimmy is betrayed by the Shadow Master, he renounces his evil ways and joins his brother as a Dragon Warrior.

The premise of the show is that the protagonist brothers are separated at birth. It was produced by DiC Animation in association with Bohbot Entertainment and Tradewest, Inc., and ran for 26 half-hour episodes from 1993 to 1994. "Double Dragon" was an American-Canadian animated series based on the video game series of the same name.
